What is Heroin?
Heroin is an illicit drug that is derived from morphine found in opium plants; however; heroin is 2-3 times stronger than morphine. Pure heroin takes the form of a white power but it can also be liquidized for injection. Heroin can also be found as a pill or as a black “tar” substance. The drug is a highly addictive and affects the nervous system. Those who abuse heroin experience a “rush.” According to the Controlled Substance Act, heroin is a Schedule 1 drug, which means that it has no use within the medical field and is highly dangerous. Most people are not aware of the dangers of abusing heroin. The drug is very potent and often times leads to overdose and death.

What Are The Effects of Heroin?
One of the side effects of heroin is the feeling of euphoria or “the rush.” Studies have surveyed people saying that they not only feel a rush but they also experience a flushing or warmness of the skin and dry mouth. As the euphoria began to subside, people said that they felt drowsy and their mental state became clouded. Other side effects include dilated pupils, shallowness of breath, nausea, coma, and even death. There are many other effects of abusing heroin, many of which become medical concerns such as the collapsing of veins, the spreading of HIV and AIDS due to shared needles, hepatitis, inflammation of heart lining, and even sudden abortion.

Heroin Usage Within The U.S.
Between the years of 2002 to 2013, the numbers of heroin overdose nearly quadrupled. This means that the abuse of heroin increased by 63%. In 2013 alone, 517,000 people reported that they had used heroin which is a 150% increase from the year 2007. Also in 2013, 8,200 people died from heroin overdose.
